Martha Robertson, the Democratic candidate for Congress and former chair of the Tompkins County legislature, will visit St. Mark’s Terrace in Penn Yan Thursday, Aug. 14, at 1:30 p.m. The public is invited. The Terrace is an independent living facility for seniors at 110 Chapel St., Penn Yan.

Robertson, who is billing the event as “Muffins with Martha,” plans an open discussion of issues that are important to the residents of the Terrace and to the wider community. Muffins, coffee, and other refreshments will be served.

A representative of the National Committee to Preserve Social Security and Medicare will be on hand to participate in the discussion. The organization, which was founded by Congressman James Roosevelt, son of President Franklin Roosevelt, describes itself as the leading advocacy organization for protecting Social Security and Medicare. It has backed such measures as allowing Medicare to bargain with drug manufacturers in order to lower the cost of prescription medications.
