Reading fire kills two people

Multiple fire departments responded to a major house fire late Tuesday morning near Watkins Glen.

Two people died in a house fire Tuesday morning north of Watkins Glen.

The blaze started shortly before 10 a.m. at 3320 County Route 28 in the Town of Reading, according to the Schuyler County Sheriff's Office.

More than a dozen volunteer fire departments from four counties, including the Watkins Glen Fire Department, responded to the scene.

Two victims were found in the residence and their information is being withheld pending positive identification, the sheriff's office said.

The structure was reportedly fully involved, according to fire officials who were on the scene.

The cause of the fire is under investigation. Fire investigators from the state Office of Fire Prevention and Control are assisting the sheriff's office.

Responding fire departments also included, Montour Falls, Odessa, Burdett, Tyrone, Hector, Beaver Dams, Himrod, Dundee, Wayne, Monterey, Mecklenburg, Millport, Town & Country and Savona.

The Village of Horseheads Fire Department sent units to Watkins Glen to be on standby.
