Sunny Point season opens with celebration June 5
Everyone is welcome to stop by and check out Sunny Point on June 5 and celebrate the start of summer with the Arts Center of Yates County.
KEUKA LAKE -- Summer is officially upon us and the Arts Center of Yates County is looking forward to officially opening its seasonal lakeside studios, Sunny Point.
The official opening of Sunny Point is Sunday, June 5 from 1 to 4 p.m. In addition to tours of the facility, located at 868 East Lake Road, Dundee, there will be live music provided by Janelle Richardson in conjunction with FLX Music 247, beer tastings by Keg and Barrel, wine tastings by Weis Vineyards, and a pig roast organized by Tim McCracken. Pig roast tickets are $25 per person for pork, baked beans, coleslaw and a roll and are available at the Arts Center. Call 315-536-8226 to reserve your ticket – only a limited number are available.
Part of a generous estate gift from the late Dr. Annie Smith, Sunny Point is a charming and unique property which includes a small cottage used to house visiting artists and instructors, a “red barn” studio and a small boathouse which is now a fully stocked pottery studio.
Retired Honeoye art teacher Tim Williams will manage the pottery studio this summer. He has scheduled a series of pottery classes for all ages and levels of experience throughout the summer – information on those workshops can be found on the Arts Center’s website, www.artscenteryatescounty.org. There will also be open studio time available for those with some experience in pottery and opportunities for private tutoring in both slab and wheel work.
Members of the Sunny Point committee have chosen artists from Kentucky and Florida for 10 day residencies in July and September. This is the 12th year of the residency program, which attracts interest from artists in a wide variety of media around the country. This year’s residents work in collage, painting, pottery, and photography. Arts Center volunteers look forward to seeing how their time at Sunny Point provides inspiration in the work. Committee members and volunteers have also spent the spring making improvements to the red barn studio space and preparing the property for the summer season.
