Middlesex Citizen Appreciation Day Aug. 7

Middlesex Heritage Group

MIDDLESEX — The 18th Middlesex Citizen Appreciation Day will be held from 2 to 4 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 7 at the Middlesex Fire Hall, 5537 Water St.

In 1992, Middlesex Town Historian Fred Harter was honored for his service to the Town of Middlesex. His successor as Historian, Stuart J. Mitchell, was recognized in 1997. In 2004, an annual Appreciation Day was instituted, sponsored by the Town of Middlesex, the Middlesex Heritage Group, and the Middlesex Hose Company. Since then, 53 citizens have been honored for their significant contributions to the town. A plaque bearing their names is displayed in the Middlesex Town Hall.

Leigh Williams

This year's honoree is Leigh Williams, who died unexpectedly at his home in Vine Valley on Jan. 11, 2022. He was born Jan. 27, 1944, the son of Howard and Alice Middlebrook Williams. Leigh graduated from Middlesex Valley Central School in 1962, and from Morrisville College. He retired as District Manager for Rochester Gas and Electric in 1994. Leigh devoted many hours in service to community organizations, including the Middlesex Heritage Group, Middlesex Conservation Club, Kiwanis, SCOPE, and the Republican Party. He was a Hunter Safety Instructor and was inducted into the New York State Outdoorsmen Hall of Fame in 2020. Leigh was instrumental in promoting improvements to the Vine Valley Beach and the State boat launch.

The Middlesex Heritage Group is located in the Town Hall at 1216 Route 245 in the Town of Middlesex, and specializes in local history. It is open on Wednesday from 9 a.m. to noon.
