A tractor trailer loaded with a 14.5-ton military dump truck overturned on the Rte. 54 spur near Dresden June 9.

The State Rte. 54 spur to Rte. 14 near Dresden was closed for 5 hours when a tractor trailer loaded with a 14.5-ton military dump truck overturned at 5:45 a.m. June 9.

Yates County Sheriff's Deputies report Austin S. Gomez, 64, of Green Bay Road, Racine Wis., was driving east on Rte. 54 when he turned left onto the spur at too great a speed. The semi went off the east side of the spur, striking an electric utility pole, and the trailer overturned, throwing off the dump truck as well as a 3-ton generator.

Yates County Sheriff's Deputies, N.Y. State Police Commercial Inspection Unit, Dresden Fire Dept, U.S. Army Reserve, N.Y. State Dept. of Transportation, Metal Recovery Tow Service, and NYSEG all responded. According to deputies, the truck and trailer suffered little to no damage, but the dump truck and trailer were damaged. The spur was closed for 5 hours as the wreckage was cleared, the pole replaced, and power was restored.

Gomez was uninjured, but was charged with failure to reduce speed for a special hazard, having an insecure load, and making false log book entries. He was released with tickets to appear in Torrey Town Court June 24.
