A Geneva woman died in a one vehicle crash the Yates County Sheriff's office has determined was an intentional act Saturday morning, July 2 in the Town of Benton.

The Yates County Sheriff's Department report says Deborah W. McGhan, 59, of Geneva, died instantly after she drove her vehicle through the intersection of Bellona Station Road on North Flat Street in the town of Benton at about 8:13 a.m.

Geneva City Police had earlier advised Yates County Sheriff's Department and Penn Yan Police to be on the lookout for a white Kia being operated by Ms. McGhan after family and friends had asked officials to check on her welfare.

Ontario and Yates County deputies were dispatched to the area of North Flat Street after McGhan's cell phone location was identified in the area of North Flat Street and Bellona Station Road. An Ontario County Deputy located her vehicle on the northbound shoulder of North Flat Street. As the marked patrol vehicle approached her car, McGhan rapidly accelerated her vehicle, failed to stop at the intersection of Bellona Station Road, and traveled through a residence's yard, where it struck a large tree and came to rest. Sheriff's officials say McGhan died instantly and was pronounced dead at the scene by Coroner Brian Champlin.

Deputies say the investigation into the original complaint led the agencies involved to rule the crash to be an intentional act by McGhan. The report released Saturday evening showed McGhan had traveled approximately 1,507 feet from where she was parked to where she struck the tree.

Yates and Ontario County Sheriff's Department were assisted by Geneva Police, Penn Yan Ambulance, Benton/Bellona Fire Department, Medic 55 and the Yates County Emergency Services Director.
