Yates County Sheriff's Report for May 28, 2008
Aaron R. Newman, 37, of 3842 Friend Hill Road, Penn Yan was arrested by Yates County Sheriff Deputies after he was accused of a course of sexual conduct against a child second degree (Class D felony). He is accused of touching a child less than 13 years old over a period of time longer than three months. These actions were alleged to have occurred in the Village of Penn Yan between 2004 and 2006. He was arraigned by the Town of Benton Court and remanded to the Yates County Jail on $15,000 cash or $30,000 bond.
Raquan Banks, 20, of 317 LaFayette St., Schenectady, was arrested at Keuka College on May 21 for harassment second degree. Banks allegedly struck a woman in the face. Following the arrest he was placed in the Yates County Jail on $1000 bail.
William J. Clark, 37, of 133 East Main St., Penn Yan was charged with rape third degree and endangering the welfare of a child on May 21. The arrest follows a joint investigation between the Sheriff’s Office and the Yates County Department of Social Services. Clark allegedly had sexual intercourse with a person under 17 years old in May 2008. Clark was arraigned in the Town of Benton Court and committed to jail in lieu of $20,000 cash or $40,000 bond.
James Withey, 27, of 1788 North Main St., Penn Yan was charged with second degree criminal contempt and bail jumping at 10:48 p.m. May 24 in Penn Yan. Deputy Brad Cole reports when deputies responded to a domestic violence call, they discovered Withey at the residence in violation of an order of protection. There was an outstanding bench warrant for an unrelated bail jumping charge in the Town of Benton. He was arraigned in the Town of Benton and remanded to the Yates County Jail.
Tia Sheldon, 21 of 1788 North Main St., Penn Yan was charged with second degree criminal contempt and third degree assault in the same incident. Cole reports Sheldon was also at the residence in violation of an order of protection. She allegedly bit the finger of a Town of Benton resident. She was arraigned in the Town of Benton and remanded to the Yates County Sheriff’s Department. Penn Yan Police and New York State Police assisted at the scene.
Elizabeth M. Smith, 32, 5926 Warden Corners Road, Hector, was charged with a suspended registration and aggravated unlicensed operation, third degree at 9:14 a.m. May 24 in the Town of Barrington. Deputy Chad Betts reports Smith was stopped after the Yates County plate reader revealed the vehicle registration was suspended, which was confirmed through the dispatch. A background check of her license revealed her license was suspended. She was transported to the town of Jerusalem Court for arraignmant and was released. She will appear in Barrington Court.
Kevin T. Cooke, 47, of Seager Hill Road, Savona, was charged with endangering the welfare of a child and second degree aggravated harassment May 23 in Penn Yan.Sgt. Ed Nemitz reports Cooke was arrested afer it was alleged that he had an inappropriate relationship with a female under age 16. Cooke allegedly sent inappropriate letters to the same female after he was told to stop. He was arraigned in Benton Town Court and remanded to Yates County Jail in lieu of $5,000 cash or $10,000 bond.
