MILO — A fire that was discovered by a passing Yates County Deputy at 3:20 a.m. Christmas day completely destroyed a large dairy barn owned by Noah H. Reiff, 33, of 3366 State Route 14A Penn Yan.

Yates County Deputy Randy Andrews noticed flames coming from the structure as he drove south past the farm. Deputy Jeffrey Rider reports a quick response from the Penn Yan  Volunteer Fire Department with mutual aid from multiple departments prevented the fire from reaching any of the other structures on the property.

Volunteers from Dundee, Branchport, Bellona, Himrod, Wayne and Dresden Fire departments and the Penn Yan Area Volunteer Ambulance Corps were all at the scene.

Volunteers were called back to the scene later in the day when the fire re-kindled during demolition work. Officials did not report on the fate of the animals in the barn.

By Friday, scores more volunteers were working on the site, beginning the process to rebuild the barn.

The Yates County Fire investigation team has not yet determined the fire’s cause
