Several law enforcement agencies continued the search Sunday for a Corning man who fell off a boat into Keuka Lake Saturday evening.

Steuben County Sheriff Joel Ordway said the search for Richard V. O’Dell, 45, of Elmhurst Circle, Corning, was called off at approximately 6 p.m. Sunday due to severe thunderstorms moving through the area.

The search resumed at 7 a.m. today.

Ordway said at this point they are assuming O’Dell drowned.

“We’re treating this as a recovery,” Ordway said.

Ordway said a group of divers, including teams from the Steuben and Yates sheriffs’ departments and the Branchport and Wayne fire departments, are concentrating the search on the east branch of Keuka Lake about eight miles north of Hammondsport, at a depth of 110 feet.

“That part of lake has a suspended, muddy bottom which makes it kind of tough to see with a camera,” Ordway said. “Where he probably is, at 110 feet, is 37 degrees.”

Ordway said O’Dell was sitting in the back of a boat Saturday evening when he

fell out.

“The boat was just starting off and it failed to plane,” Ordway said. “He was sitting in the rear, as the driver attempted to bring the boat down to an even plane, he fell out the back.”
