Janet Lane, 55, the former Penn Yan school bus driver accused of endangering the welfare of a child after a 3-year-old was left unattended on the bus she drove, appeared in Penn Yan Village Court Monday evening (Dec. 13). She did not enter a plea, and told Judge Danny Hibbard that she wants a court-appointed public defender.

She declined an opportunity to comment on the incident outside the courtroom.

She is scheduled to reappear in village court on Jan. 10, 2011.

Lane was terminated by the school district last week after the school investigated the incident when the boy, who attends Head Start, was left on the bus which had taken children to an after school program at the Methodist Church.

The incident occurred on Friday, Dec. 3. following a bus run on an early dismissal day for Elementary and Head Start students.
