A Finger Lakes Railway train and a Casella Waste Management truck collided at Emerson Cove crossing near Rt. 14 in the town of Benton at approximately 8:45 am on Thursday.  The northbound train with a single locomotive and only tree cars, struck the rear quarter of the the truck spinning it almost 180 degrees, and was able to stop within 60 yards of the scene. The truck, while exiting Emerson Cove, reportedly did not stop at the crossing despite the unobstructed view and repeated horn blasts from the engineer.

The truck driver, who remained conscious, was transported via Mercy Flight to Strong Memorial Hospital for examination of head trauma. The engineer was unhurt. Both the truck and the locomotive suffered moderate damage.

WestLake Road Fire Assoc. and Penn Yan Ambulance Corps responded to the emergency, managing the rescue, transportation, and the continued flow of traffic on Rt. 14 immediately adjacent to the accident scene.
