Richard Regan charged with witness tampering

Staff reports

Richard A. Regan, 67, of 10558 East Lake Road, Hammondsport, has been charged by Yates County Sheriff's Investigators with witness tampering.

According to Senior Investigator Michael Christensen, Regan was present at Benton Town Court while the trial of his son, Richard A. Regan III, for driving while intoxicated, was in session. During the jury selection process, while the elder Regan was waiting for the trial to commence, it is alleged that he was discussing his son's case with a prosecution witness. It is further alleged that he asked that witness "to alter and change his testimony from the truth," reports Christensen.

Subsequently, the court was unable to select enough jurors from the summoned pool, and the younger Regan is still awaiting trial. However, the incident with his father was reported to the District Attorney, who requested investigation by the Sheriff's Office which resulted in the charge of fourth degree witness tampering. The elder Regan was issued an appearance ticket for Benton Court and released.
