Bicyclist struck by car on Havens Corners Road

Staff reports

A bicyclist was sent to Strong Memorial Hospital Thursday evening after he was struck by a car on Havens Corners Road.

Yates County Sheriff Ron Spike explains that Wendy Dietzal, 61, of North Ave. Penn Yan, was driving west on Havens Corners Road around 5:20 p.m. With the sun obstructing her view, she came upon a slow-moving buggy. She moved her car into the eastbound lane, crossing the no passing lines to avoid the buggy, and struck the bicyclist, Nathan M. Leinbach, 21 of Havens Corners Road, Penn Yan.

The collision ejected Leinbach from the bicycle and her car went into the ditch. Leinbach was taken to Strong Memorial Hospital by Penn Yan Ambulance for treatment of a possible head injury. Friday morning he was listed in satisfactory condition at Strong.

Dietzal was evaluated at the scene by medical personnel.

Mercy Flight was unable to fly for transport due to lightening in the area.

Spike says the investigation continues and charges are pending.

Yates County Deputies were assisted at the scene by Benton Fire Department, Penn Yan Ambulance, Medic 55 and New York State Police.
