The Penn Yan Middle School auditorium lights were turned down low and just the glow from the flickering candles on stage pierced the quiet atmosphere as students, teachers, staff and some very proud parents waited to hear the names of the first Penn Yan Middle School students to be inducted into the Junior National  Honor Society.

Principal Rebecca Perrault introduced the 18 students to the audience before they each lighted their own candle and signed their oath to become members of the newly-chartered chapter.

Advisors Jenna Hojnowski and Melissa Lamphier said there will be more opportunities for students to participate in scholarship, leadership and community service activities so they can join the society. “You can be on stage too, if you challenge and push yourselves, said Hojnowski.

“Take advantage of this opportunity. It’s your future,” added Lamphier.

Perrault said applicants were selected based on their scholarship, leadership, citizenship and character.
