The Yates Progressives is an informal non-artisan citizen’s group that meets monthly with the intent to keep informed about local, national and global issues.

For the fourth year, this group has awarded a graduating senior a $250 award.  The winner of this award will have made a difference in the school, community, nation, or global world by demonstrating leadership or initiative to further peace, justice, and tolerance.

Daniel Burdette

Daniel Burdette, Penn Yan Academy’s winner, has demonstrated justice at the local level.  As part of an Eagle Scout project, he organized a group of high school students to go from house to house to collect money and supplies for the Yates County American Red Cross Needs ‘N Things pantry.

The pantry hands out items to low income families such as personal hygiene items.  Daniel collected over a $1,000 worth of supplies and organized teams to sort and restock the shelves of the pantry.

Throughout the entire project, he displayed his ability to communicate, organize, and carry through bringing this project to fruition.  By doing this project, he provided about six months worth of supplies and made his local community a little bit better.

Daniel Burdette is planning on attending SUNY - Brockport and will major in Physics Education.

Jacob Crusade

This year’s recipient from Dundee High School, Jacob Crusade, showed initiative by traveling half-way around the world to the third world country of Cambodia, and stayed there a month.  There, he experienced a single room schoolhouse in a very poor district, and  interacted with some of the students.  His eyes were opened to life in a developing country, and he realized just how wealthy America really is. He has a better understanding and empathy to contribute to the world in a positive way.

He can express an amazing talent  through music, poetry, and writing.

Jacob is involved in the community through Natural Helpers, taking EMT courses, and various jobs.  He is a well- rounded individual, and seeks to find the good in others.

Jacob will be continuing his education at SUNY - New Paltz where he has yet to declare a major.
