On June 8, four area students were awarded a $1,000 scholarship each, donated by the Rickman Family of Penn Yan in memory of Mary Rickman, who had taught art classes at Penn Yan Academy for many years.

“Mrs. Rickman was a most generous teacher, with her time as well as with her resources. Nothing made her happier than to see her students’ abilities grow  and branch out to using different medias. She sacrificed her own career as a well-known artist in order to foster the talents of the young students entrusted to her,” says a statement released with the announcement of the awards.

The four students chosen as recipients this year, based on their teachers’ recommendation, and on their commitment to continue their art studies, are Kate Johnson, a graduating senior from Penn Yan Academy, Jessen Swidder and  Samantha Case, graduating seniors from Marcus Whitman, and Crystal Cochel, a student at Keuka College.
