As the holiday season approaches, local organizations are seeking holiday donations and volunteers. Without the assistance of such support, these programs and services would be unable to provide help for those in need. 2-1-1 HELPLINE, an initiative of the Institute for Human Services Inc., provides referrals for donors, volunteers, and those needing to find help by connecting individuals to local organizations throughout the community.

Carol Wood, Director of 2-1-1 HELPLINE, recognizes the significant impact of helping others in various ways. “Giving back in whatever capacity – donating, volunteering, referring someone to call 2-1-1 for help – truly brings the community together,” states Wood. “The needs are greater than ever, but so is the potential for support this holiday season.”

Many agencies are offering special ways to get involved throughout the holiday season, including adopt-a-family programs and volunteer opportunities to wrap and distribute gifts. Holiday Caring opportunities in Yates County include:

• Catholic Charities of Steuben & Yates Counties - Kinship Family and Youth Services Penn Yan 315-536-6632 —Accepting donations of soap, clothing, household cleaning supplies, diapers, dish clothes, and towels, in addition to food and gifts for their children. Seeking individuals, agencies, or other families to adopt needy families for Thanksgiving and/or Christmas. Call for information on specific needs.

•  Christmas For The Needy 315-481-9623 — Accepting donations of clothes, toys, food items, quilts, and blankets to provide to needy families during the holiday season. This program operates on generous donations and the work of many volunteers. Call if interested in volunteering.

• Food for the Needy Program 315-536-0007 — Accepts food, winter clothing, quilts, blankets, and monetary donations to help individuals during the holiday season. Volunteers are needed to help collect items for the baskets, put them together, and to deliver. Contact volunteer coordinator for information at 315-536-6788.

• Friendship House of Middlesex 585-554-6056— Accepting donations of any kind to help fill holiday baskets and purchase gifts and toys.
