Yates Fire fighters compete in winter games
There might not have been much snow, but there were enthusiastic competitors from Yates County at the annual FASNY (Firemen’s Association of the State of New York) Winter Games held in Cortland earlier this month.
“There were over 30 teams this year and even though there was no snow, we still had fun,” reports Denise Slocum, who has coordinated the teams from Branchport-Keuka Park for the past two years.
Yates County, through the Branchport Keuka Park Fire Department, fielded three teams, including the only all woman team in the competition, which drew fire departments from all over New York State to compete in tubing, sled pulling, hose racing, tug-of-war, and broom ball events.
The overall champion was a team from Farmingville in Suffolk County. Team Two from Branchport-Keuka Park finished in the top five for the Tug of War.
The three teams from Branchport-Keuka Park Fire Department, with mutual aid from other Yates County departments were:
Team One: Team Captain Corey Slocum, Joe Yankanich, mutual aid from Potter; Jeremy Fox, Matthew Ryder, mutual aid from Himrod, and Evan Shipman.
Team Two: (all-women’s team) Team Captain Denise Slocum, Chris Warriner, Sondra Warriner, Jesse (Lambert) Yankanich, mutual aid from Potter and, Kelsey Broome from Penn Yan.
Team Three: Chief Steve Schmidt, Third Assistant Chief George Slocum, and Bob Warriner. They used two from the other teams to complete the different stations.
