The Yates County Sheriff’s Office has received reports that political campaign signs have been stolen from yards at various locations in the county.

“What people may not realize is that stealing a campaign sign, or tampering with a sign, is a crime of larceny and perhaps trespassing,” says Sheriff Ronald Spike.

Spike advises the signs are the property of the homeowner, and adds, “Typically, these thefts are not reported to police, yet if you are the victim of a yard sign theft, you may call our non-emergency line at 536-4438 to let us know. This way, if we begin to see a trend in one area, we can give that area more patrol attention.”
