In 2002, Hayes’ father requested this flag from numerous elected officials. Leader Kolb was the only one to provide a state flag for the Sergeant to carry overseas as a reminder of home while away on his tours.

Hayes shared the flag with the signatures of his friends and fellow soldiers as a thank you to Leader Kolb for his generosity. As the proud son, brother, father and uncle of veterans, Kolb said he was happy to help Hayes in his quest for a state flag.

Sgt. James Hayes served tours in both Iraq and Afghanistan after completing his training at Fort Bragg in North Carolina.

Hayes is planning to attend Keuka College for a degree in social work and hopes to help other Veterans like himself in the future.
