The annual Elks Hoop Shoot foul shooting contest will be held on Saturday, Jan. 12, 2008  in the Penn Yan Elementary School gym.

This contest is open to all boys and girls ages 8-13 and is free of charge to the participants. Your age is the age you will be on April 1, 2008, so if your youngster will be 8 years old by that date and will not reach his/her 14th birthday by then, he/she is eligible to participate.

There will be six groupings — boys and girls ages 8-9, boys and girls ages 10-11, and boys and girls ages 12-13 and trophies will be awarded to first and second place winners in each division.

This contest is the first step in a multi-level national contest where over 3,000,000 youngsters compete each year for a chance at being a National free throw champion and having their name inscribed in the Basketball Hall of Fame.

Winners in each division will move on to the District contest which this year is being held in Horseheads on Jan. 26, 2008.

The contest allows each youngster to shoot 10 free throws in the order of registration, then go back and sit down until all in his/her group have completed a turn.

The youngster then returns to the line and shoots an additional 15 free throws for score.

The winner is the individual who makes the most free throws. Ties are broken by shooting five additional free throws in order until the tie is broken.

An official girl’s size basketball is used for boy’s ages 8/9 and all age divisions of girls. An official boy’s size basketball is used for the boys 10/11 and boys 12/13 brackets.

In case you decide to help your youngster practice before coming that day, girls and boys ages 8/9 shoot from a free throw line that is 4 feet closer to the basket (that is, 11 feet away). All others shoot from the regulation free throw line (15 feet from the basket).

Anyone with questions can call Steve Breuer. “If I’m not there, leave a message and a good time to call you back.

The Elks hope to see lots of kid turn out on Saturday, Jan. 12 at the Penn Yan Elementary gym at 8:30 a.m. The Hoop Shoot will go forward, regardless of weather, so be prepared.
