Simmons advances to State Hoop Shoot Contest

Morgan Simmons accepts the award for the most shots in a row — 13 — during the West Regional contest.

Morgan Simmons, daughter of Darren and Julie Simmons, won the West Regional Elks Hoop Shoot contest on Saturday by sinking 21 of her 25 free throws.

Simmons, who has now captured first place trophies in the local, district, and west region contests, will advance to Homer, on Saturday Feb. 16, where she will compete against girls from all regions of New York State.

There, she’ll vie for the right to advance to the tri-state contest consisting of shooters from New York, New Jersey, and Pennsylvania. The winners at that level advance to the United States finals which will be held in Indianapolis in April.

Morgan went eight for her first 10 and then, after a couple of misses, found the range again and finished by making 13 shots in a row.

The 13 string was also good enough to get her a plaque for the most consecutive free throws made that day, as she bested all the other division winners in this area.

A veteran of the Hoop Shoot, and certainly the "go to" girl on the modified basketball team, Morgan's efforts are really paying off as she continues her march towards a possible national championship. Penn Yan is certainly proud of you, Morgan, and best of luck in Homer.
