Lady Wildcats will play in sectional title game

The Marcus Whitman Wildcat Girl’s Basketball team advanced to the championship game in Section V Class BB?Tournament with an exciting 54-48 semi-final win over Livonia Monday, Feb. 25 in Canandaigua.

The two teams played an even first half with the score tied 23-23 at the half. The key quarter for the Lady Wildcats was the third. Whitman outscored the Lady Bulldogs 23-13 to take control of the game. Livonia made a mini-run in the final stanza outscoring Whitman by four points, but it was not enough.

Bri Dunton led the Wildcat attack with 15 points, including seven in the key third quarter. Rachel Northrup added 13 points with seven, also coming in  the third quarter. Danielle Turner chipped in 12 points and Ashley Bardeen had 10.

Freshman Hannah Barnett, a guard called up for sectionals, started in the back court. She was filling in for Jamie Archer, who was suffering from the flu.

Barnett did a fine job playing in her first sectional game.

The Lady Wildcats will play Wayland/Cohocton at the Blue Cross Arena at 8:30 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 28 in the championship game.

They defeated Waterloo 56-47 last Thursday evening in Gorham to advance to Monday’s semi-final game. 

The two teams had played two close games during the regular season and this third match-up was no different.

The number two seed Wildcats jumped ahead 18-9 in the first quarter.  Waterloo narrowed the lead to 28-21 at the half. 

Whitman outscored the visitors 14-8 in the third quarter to put the game out of reach and advance in the Class BB Tourney.

Bri Dunton was Whitman’s top scorer with 19 points.  She also had five steals.  Ashley Bardeen contributed 13 points and hauled down 10 rebounds and six steals. 

Ali Phalen also had 10 rebounds.
