The annual Elks Hoop Shoot foul shooting contest will be held on Jan. 10 in the Penn Yan Elementary School gym. This contest is open to all boys and girls, ages 8-13 and is free of charge to the participants.

Your age is the age you will be on April 1, 2009. A youngster who will be 8-years-old, but not yet 14 by April 1 is eligible to participate.

There will be six groupings — boys and girls ages 8-9, boys and girls ages 10-11, and boys and girls ages 12-13 and trophies will be awarded to first and second place winners in each division.

This contest is the first step in a multi-level national contest where over 3 million compete for a chance at being a National free throw champion and having their name inscribed in the Basketball Hall of Fame. Winners in each division will move on to the District contest which this year is being held in Penn Yan on Jan. 24.

The contest allows each youngster to shoot 10 free throws in the order of registration, then go back and sit down until the entire group has completed a turn.

The youngster then returns to the line and shoots an additional 15 free throws for score. The winner is the individual who makes the most free throws.

Ties are broken by shooting five additional free throws in order until the tie is broken. An official girl’s size basketball is used for boys ages 8 to 9 and all age divisions of girls.

An official boys size basketball is used for the boys 10 to 11 and 12 to 13 brackets.

In case you decide to help your youngster practice before coming that day, girls and boys ages 8 to 9 shoot from a free throw line that is four feet closer to the basket (that is, 11 feet away from the basket).

All others shoot from the regulation free throw line (15 feet from the basket).

Anyone with questions can call Steve Breuer at 536-4184. Leave a message with  a good time to call you back.

The Hoop Shoot will be held regardless of weather, notes Breuer.
