Dundee Scots win Tip -off Tournament
The Dundee Scots defeated Webster Christian and Marcus Whitman to win their own tipoff tourney.
The 2010-11 edition of the Scotsmen Roundballers opened their season by rolling over Webster Christian 71-38 in the opening round of the Dundee Tipoff Tournament on Friday night.
The hometown five raced to an overwhelming 47-12 lead at the half and cruised to the first game win.
Garrick Conyers was the leading scorer for the Scots, notching 28 points. Senior Joe Tortolon added 9 points in the first round win.
Earlier in the evening, Marcus Whitman downed Romulus 51-40 behind the scoring of Nate Miller and Jesse Moore. They tallied 20 and 14 points respectively for the victorious Wildcats.
This set up Saturday’s championship game featuring Dundee and Marcus Whitman.
The tournament main event was a close encounter throughout. The visiting Wildcats jumped to a 17-14 first quarter lead and held a slim 29-28 lead at the half.
The hometown Scots gradually took control in the second half. The game was tied at 43 after three quarters. It was nip and tuck in the final stanza until Dundee’s Kyle Spinks canned a 3-pointer with just under two minutes remaining to give the Scots the lead for good.
Dundee held on for a 54-51 win and walked off the court with the tournament title.
Tortolon registered 20 points in the win and was named the tournament M.V.P. Conyers added 8 points for Dundee. He was also named to the All-Tournament team for his stellar weekend performance. Nate Miller and
Dan Wickham scored 17 and 12 points respectively for the MW Wildcats. Dundee opens their new season on a high note and a 2-0 record.
