Penn Yan gymnast takes top honors

Sydney Gifford, a competitive gymnast representing Rochester Gymnastics Academy, recently captured top honors in the Level 7, 12-13 year-old age group, at the 2011 Spring Graffiti Invitational gymnastics competition held in Buffalo.  This New York State qualifying invitational competition included gymnasts from New York, Ohio, Maryland, Vermont and Pennsylvania.

Sydney, a sixth grade student at Penn Yan Middle School, took first place all-around with a combined score of 36.5 in four events. Her individual scores and placements that made up the all-around scores were as follows: Uneven bars 9.35 - first place; vault 9.35 - second place; floor exercise 9.15 – third place; and balance beam 8.65.

By achieving a total combined score of over 33.5, Sydney qualified to compete in the New York State Gymnastics Championship to be held in Buffalo the last weekend in April. This invitation-only event is reserved for the top qualifying gymnasts across New York.

Sydney is a member of the Rochester Gymnastics Academy in East Rochester, New York.  She has been competing at the local, regional, national and international level since 2008.
