Lady Mustangs defeat Wayne
The Penn Yan Mustang softball squad has recently had trouble nailing down wins. Since jumping off to an early 3-0 record and looking nearly unbeatable, the Orange and Blue Diamond girls have experienced a bit of a slump, dropping 4 of 5 games. However, last Friday, the Lady Mustangs used some late game magic to get back on the winning path.
Penn Yan trailed Wayne on Friday in Ontario Center 6-4 going into the final stanza. But the resilient Mustangs posted a big four spot in the seventh inning to pull out a 8-6 victory and, hopefully, reverse their recent fortunes. Matty Ponsetti had a big afternoon, driving in three runs with two key hits, including the game winners in the seventh. Morgan Simmons also delivered a two run base knock to aid the Mustang’s winning cause. With this big win over Wayne, the Lady Mustangs improved their record to 4-2 in the Finger Lakes East and 5-5 overall.
Mynderse 5 Penn Yan 3
The Orange and Blue softball crew suffered a tough 5-3 setback to the Mynderse Blue Devils at the Middle School Field in Penn Yan on Wednesday afternoon. This loss was difficult to take because Penn Yan had battled back from a 3-1 deficit to tie the game at 3 going into the final inning.
Mynderse pushed across a couple of late runs to take home the victory. Bri Bush pitched a gem for Penn Yan in this contest, striking out eight Mynderse batters.
A couple of Penn Yan miscues and Mynderse hits would prove costly for the hometown Mustangs. Bush also had a couple of hits for Penn Yan in this contest. If the loss was not bad enough, Penn Yan suffered the loss of their senior shortstop Kate Disbrow due to an emergency appendectomy. The six-year varsity veteran will be out indefinitely.
The Lady Mustangs traveled to Waterloo on Monday to take on rival Waterloo in a Finger Lakes East showdown. The two teams battled to a 4-4 tie after 4 1/2 innings, when the game was suspended because of rain.
Dundee 30 HAC 9
The Dundee Lady Scot softball team notched their first win of the season Thursday afternoon in Brighton, downing H.A.C 30-9. Dundee scored 10 runs in the fourth inning to blow this contest open.
Renee Thomas went 4-for-4, including a triple to pace the Dundee offense. Haley Brown clubbed a homerun for the Scots. Casi Strait delivered a triple and a double.
Eighth grader Olivia Taylor picked up her first varsity win, striking out seven batters.
DeSales 19 Dundee 6
On Wednesday afternoon, DeSales defeated the Lady Scots 19-6 in Dundee.
Thomas slapped a double and a triple for Dundee while Casi Strait delivered two singles and a triple. DeSales scored 11 runs in the middle three innings to put this game away.
On Friday afternoon, Honeoye swept a double header from Dundee.
They won the opener 10-3 and completed the sweep downing the Scots 17-4 in the nightcap. The Lady Scots ended the week with a 1-7 record.
