Eckerson's superb mound effort propels Penn Yan to tournament semifinals

There is an old adage in baseball that pitching is 90 percent of the game.  If you have a pitcher who can dominate, success will generally follow you.  If the other team can't score, you are always in the game.  Penn Yan's ace hurler Elliott Eckerson did an excellent job proving that point on Friday evening in Penn Yan against Dansville.

The dynamic Penn Yan junior hurler dominated the visitors from the south, striking out 13 batters and guiding Penn Yan to an impressive 6-1 in this Class BB quarterfinal matchup.

The hometown Mustang nine posted six runs in the first four innings to make things easy for them.

With a six spot on the board, that was all that Elliott Eckerson would need.  Offensively for Penn Yan, John Martisch stroked a key RBI double to get the No. 3 seed Mustang offense rolling.  Aaron Bodine also delivered a big RBI single for Penn Yan (12-6).

Up next for the local diamond crew  — trip to the Class BB semifinals on Tuesday against a very tough Hornell team.  The Red Raiders, always a difficult assignment for Penn Yan, is seeded No. 2 in the tournament.  It should be a good one.  The finals for Class BB arer scheduled for Friday at a site to be determined.
