The Mustangs celebrate the re-capture of the Sectional crown.

The Penn Yan Mustang lacrosse team is back on top of the Section V lacrosse world. After a one year absence, the Mustangs are the Section V Class champions after defeating the Bath Haverling Rams 12-6 at St. John Fisher College on Tuesday afternoon.

This an astounding 16th time that the local laxers have claimed a Section V title. The Orange and Blue laxers will now set their sights on a New York State title. They will play the Section VI Class C champion on Saturday at St. John Fisher College.  The State tournament will be held at Cicero North Syracuse High School later in the month.

The Bath Rams struck first in Tuesday's championship game.  Penn Yan answered with a couple of goals and held a slight 3-2 lead after one quarter.  It was the second quarter that would dictate the outcome of this contest.  The Mustang laxers scored five goals and held their southern Keuka Lake neighbors to just one.

The first half ended with Penn Yan holding a decisive 8-3 lead.

The halftime was extended due to the high heat. Officials explained that once the field temperature exceeds 96 degrees F, the game must be paused until the temperature falls below that mark again.

The second half was played evenly with the Mustangs outscoring the Rams 4-3.  But when the final horn sounded, Penn Yan won the game 12-6 and captured another Section V title for their efforts.

Rion Davison was the scoring leader for the Orange and Blue lax forces.  He scored four goals and added an assist. J.J. Voigt notched three goals, Anthony Luppino one goal and two assists, Adam Stork one goal and one assist, Ryan Maciejewski one goal and four assists, and Dylan Yonts two goals and one assist.

Brandon Maciejewski was tough in the Penn Yan nets, stopping 12 shots and recording a .667 save percentage.

Dylan Yonts, the Mustang's Junior midfielder, was named the Most Valuable Player.

Mustangs who were named to the Class C Tournament All-star team were Rion Davison, Freshman attack, JJ Voigt, Senior midfielder, Baird Wilber, Senior defender, Brandon Maciejewski, Freshman goalie and Ryan Maciejewski, Sophomore attack.

Anthony Luppino, Senior midfielder and Yonts were both named to the first Section Five All-Section Team, first team. James Voigt, Senior midfielder, was named to the second team.

The Mustangs will play the Section Six Class C Champion (either Amherst or Silver Creek) at St. John Fisher at 6 p.m. Saturday, June 4 in the second round of the state tournament.
