Girls Tennis: Midlakes 3, Penn Yan 2

The Penn Yan Girls' Tennis team's season ended Oct. 11 with a 3-2 loss in the first round of sectionals to the Midlakes Screaming Eagles.

The No. 5 seeded Mustangs lost two points in the doubles competitions, with the No. 4 seeded Screaming Eagles pairings of Katie VanHooft/Megan Fancett and Jordan Lunser/Leah Pollot winning in straight sets.

Mustang seniors Kara Hollowell and Rachel Gaston both won the final singles matches of their careers, while Kelly Leitner of Midlakes won 6-1, 7-6 (8-6) to send Midlakes to the Class B semifinals. Midlakes would lose 5-0 to the top ranked Palmyra-Macedon Red Raiders the next day. Palmyra-Macedon was upset by Harley-Allendale-Columbia in the finals for HAC's second consecutive sectional crown. Penn Yan finishes the year at 5-6.
