Penn Yan’s senior night festivities were spoiled by a 2-0 loss to the Waterloo Indians Oct. 20.

Senior defender Taryn Simmons scored in the seventh minute and senior midfielder Jayme McCreary added a goal in the 53rd minute for the Indians. Waterloo juniors Moriah Excell and Cydney Hrycko were credited with assists on McCreary’s goal.

Waterloo freshman goalkeeper Caitlyn Castle had five saves for the shutout. Senior Leah Swarthout made five saves and allowed a goal in twenty minutes of goaltending, while junior Cassana Banach manned the net for the remainder of the game, stopping eight shots and allowing a goal.

Mustang coach Jill Mackerchar said, “I think that the seniors really got a chance to come together as a team.”

The Mustangs playNo. 5 seeded Mynderse Academy on Oct. 25 in the Class B Sectionals. Penn Yan’s 5-7-4 record earned them the No. 12 seed. Mynderse Academy went 11-4-1 this year.

Mynderse and Penn Yan have already squared off once this year, with Mynderse winning in Penn Yan by a score of 4-1.
