High School Sports: Penn Yan boy's basketball edges Waterloo 60-59

The Penn Yan Mustang boy's basketball team extended their current mini-winning streak to two games with a narrow 60-59 win over Waterloo in Penn Yan Friday night. The win improved Penn Yan's Finger Lakes East record to 6-2 and 9-4 overall. They are tied for second place in the league with Mynderse and Pal-Mac. They play both teams in February.

The Friday night victory wasn't an easy one for the hometown boys. They fell behind 15-6 after the first 8 minute stanza and trailed 27-19 at the half. A big 24-9 run in the third quarter catapulted the Mustangs into the lead 43-36 with the fourth quarter remaining. The visiting Indians mounted a frenzied comeback try in the final quarter. The Orange and Blue crew held on for the point win. Waterloo's final basket was ruled a close two point field goal instead of a three pointer. The final buzzer sounded with the Mustangs savoring another come-from-behind win.

Sean Emerson led the Mustang scoring attack with 19 points including five 3-pointers. Austin Fingar added 12 points. Jake Covert added 11 points while Ben Covert chipped with 8 points.

Penn Yan's next game will be Friday evening at Midlakes.

Girl's Basketball

Dundee 67 Hammondsport 28

The Dundee girl's basketball hosted their downhill neighbors Hammondsport in a non-league game Jan. 20. The Scots hardwood quintet rolled over the Lakesiders 67-28. The Maroon and White piled up a 38-16 first half lead and added 19 more points in the third quarter for good measure. Win number 12 was a fairly easy one for the talented Dundee five. They are 12-1 overall and 9-1 in the Finger Lakes West. They will play South Seneca at home Friday evening.

The Dundee scoring onslaught was led by Brooke Howell with 28 points. She also accounted for 11 rebounds. Megan Howell notched 15 points and blocked three shots. Demi Battin added 9 points.

Boy's Bowling

Penn Yan 7 Waterloo 0

The Penn Yan Mustang boy's bowling team continued to roll up the points. The Finger Lakes East current champions shutout Waterloo 7-0 at the Lakeside Lanes Thursday afternoon. Nick Johnson led the Orange and Blue keglers, rolling a huge 616 series (212-249-155). Bryce Johnson added a 590 series (211-182-197). Jacob Whitford added a 537 (179-177-181).

Penn Yan 7 Dundee 0

The Penn Yan and Dundee bowling team competed in a non-league match at Lakeside Lanes in Penn Yan Thursday afternoon. Both the Orange and Blue girls and boys teams enjoyed wins in this Yates County showdown.

The Mustang boy's team shutout the Scotsmen 7-0. Jacob Whitford rolled a 588 series, including games of 187 and 222. Nick Johnson was the top bowler on the afternoon. He led the Mustangs with a 638 (233-224-183). Bryce Johnson added a 581 (215-215-151).

For Dundee, Ryan Goodman recorded a 497 (203) and Collin Goodman a 447 (175).

Girl's Bowling

Waterloo 4 Penn Yan 3

The Orange and Blue girl's team dropped a close 4-3 decision to Waterloo in Penn YanThursday afternoon. Courtney Ottaviano recorded a 567 series ( 191-171-205) to lead Penn Yan. Emily Snyder rolled a 425 (164) and Kari Ayers a 508 (178-192).

Penn Yan 5 Dundee 2

The Penn Yan girl's also picked a win when they defeated Dundee 5-2. Penn Yan won games one and three. Dundee edged Penn Yan 693-678 in the second game. Courtney Ottaviano led the Mustangs with a 579 (220-191). Kari Ayers added a 462 (172). Caitlyn Cornish was Dundee's top bowler with a 541 (202-175).


Dumdee 54 Red Jacket 18

The Dundee Scots wrestling team defeated Red Jacket 54-18 in Dundee last week. In contested matches, Dundee's Thomas Fiorilla won by decision in the 148 lbs. match. Brennan Krall also registered a win by decision at 152 lbs.

The Scotsmen competed in the Wayne-Finger Lakes Championship Invitational this past weekend. Dundee finished in eighth place with 91 team points. Brennan Krall finished in third place in the 152 lbs. class. Dakota Hanes came in fourth place at 182 lbs. Damon Empson (132 lbs.) and Lance Irwin (285 lbs.) placed sixth, while Jeff Wood captured a fifth place finish in the 220 lbs. classification.

Penn Yan wrestlers compete in league championship

The Penn Yan Mustang wrestling team competed in the Wayne - Finger Lakes Championship Tournament in Waterloo this past weekend. The Mustangs grabbed a 11th place finish overall, scoring 79 teams points.

Individually, for the Orange and Blue, Jarred Calice captured a fifth place finish in the 113 lbs. class. Nate Elliott (126 lbs.), Cole Kirch (132 lbs.), and Kevin Canales (145 lbs.) brought home fourth place finishes. Coty Bailey (152 lbs.), finished in sixth place.
