Sylvia Queener named Whittier women’s lax coach
Sylvia Queener was recently named the new Head Women’s Lacrosse coach announced by Executive Director of Athletics Robert Coleman.
“I’m excited about having Sylvia, with her background in lacrosse, join the Poet family,” stated Coleman. “I’m really looking forward to her leadership during this exciting time in our department. There is little doubt her high level of energy is the perfect fit for our women’s lacrosse program moving forward.”
Sylvia Queener recently completed her third season as the Pomona-Pitzer assistant coach, where she helped lead the 2016 team to a SCIAC Championship, an NCAA appearance, win, and sweet 16 finish. In her three years with the Sagehens, the teams were three time regular season champions, two time SCIAC champions, while making the NCAA Championships three times.
Queener graduated magna cum laude from Limestone College, with a BA in theatre, and ended her lacrosse career as the Conference Carolinas Co-Player of the year, received All-American honors, and competed for a national championship. She also received the Conference Carolinas Spring Scholar Athlete Award for Women’s Lacrosse. Queener also played at Monroe Community College and received All-American honors, and still holds the school record for most goals in a game (9). In high school, Queener was coached by both her mother and father, was a 2x All-American, and won a New York State Class B Championship.
“As the new women’s lacrosse head coach, I am beaming with Poet Pride,” Queener stated. “Words cannot accurately express how deeply grateful I am for the opportunity to lead and coach so many talented student-athletes at Whittier College. I want to thank Rob Coleman and the search committee for offering me my dream job. Lacrosse has been such an integral part of my life, as I was born into a family of talented coaches and athletes.”
An added bonus about her family, is that each member of it coaches lacrosse. Harry Queener (current boys coach at Penn Yan Academy), Patricia Queener (girls coach at Penn Yan Academy), Sarah Queener (played at Yale, and is the head coach at Pomona-Pitzer), Brice Queener (played at Georgetown and in the MLL, and is the head coach of the women’s lacrosse team at Rhodes College), Brett Queener (played at Herkimer CCC and Albany, currently on MLL Florida Launch, and boys head coach of Naples HS in Florida).
“I am looking forward to building lasting relationships with past, current, and future Poets, and to help each individual student-athlete reach their full potential. Whittier College is an exceptional place. With its rich history and intimate atmosphere, it is an institution that encourages and inspires its student-athletes to work toward the Division III ideal. I cannot wait to build upon the foundation that has already been created for future success.”
