Update: High School Sports Round-Up
Track & Field
With the regular season drawing to a rapid conclusion, the three area high school track and field teams competed in multi-school meets last week. The Penn Yan Mustangs and Dundee Scots traveled to Marion Tuesday for a meet. Teams from Newark and host Marion also competed.
The big news for the Dundee Scotsmen team was delivered by Cody Salvatore. He set a new season high mark in the triple jump event. He finished in first place with a jump of 44' 9 1/2". Jon Huber won the 100m and 200m events for Dundee. His efforts helped Dundee score four team wins in this competition.
For the Penn Yan boy's team, Andrew Davis picked up first place finishes in the 1,600 and 3,200 events.
In the girl's matches, Penn Yan's Mia Covell picked a win in the 1,500. Nolleen Whetham and Anna Gilbert grabbed 2nd place finishes in the 100m and high jump events respectively.
The Marcus Whitman teams traveled to North Rose-Wolcott for a meet which included teams from Williamson, East Rochester, and North Rose-Wolcott. The Wildcat boy's 4 x 100 relay team picked up a first place finish. For the Wildcat girl's team Hailey Rossi won the 800m event and Audrey Button finished in first place in the 3,000.
Penn Yan 12 Wayne 9
The Penn Yan Mustang baseball team hosted the Eagles from Wayne Tuesday afternoon at the Elm Street Field in another Finger Lakes east showdown. The Mustangs defeated Wayne 12-9 to improve their league record to 9-4. They are 9-7 overall.
The Orange and Blue offense was spirited by shortstop Eric Riehl. The Penn Yan senior clubbed a key 2-run homer to spark the Mustang offense. Lukas Larham went 3-for-3 in this game and drove in 2 runs also. Jon McKay picked up the win on the hill. He struck out 8 Eagle batters.
Honeoye 22 Marcus Whitman 4
The Wildcats from Whitman dropped a 22-4 decision to the Bulldogs from Honeoye Tuesday afternoon in Gorham. Trevor Black, Riley McLoud, and Burlin Allen picked RBI hits in this game for Whitman. With this Finger Lakes West loss, Whitman's record in the conference falls to 2-11. They are 2-15 overall.
Dundee 5 Marcus Whitman 3
Burlin Allen had one hit and drove in a run for Whitman, who also got a complete game from pitcher Jaret Brown May 13. Brown struck out eight and walked one, giving up five earned runs on six hits. He also drew two walks and stole two bases for the Wildcats. Justin Neu had two hits and stole three bases for Dundee.
Dundee 11 HAC 10
The Dundee Scot baseball team stage a 2 out rally to defeat HAC 11-10 in extra innings at home May 14 afternoon in Dundee. Wit the score tied at 10 in the 9 inning, Dundee mounted a 2 out rally to pull out this game. Justin Neu singled and stole second base. Scotsman catcher Austin Thompson delivered a single to drive in the speedy Neu and give the hometown nine the win. Justin Neu and Austin Thompson registered 2 hits each in this tightly fought game.
The win improved Dundee's Finger Lakes West record to 5-8. they are 7-8 overall.
Penn Yan 16 Wayne 12
The Penn Yan Mustang softball team defeated Wayne 16-12 at home Tuesday afternoon. The Mustang win was sparked by a 11-run outburst in the opening inning. Melanie Gleason drove in 2 runs with a triple. Syd Gifford contributed 2 hits to the Orange and Blue cause. Kailee Christensen and Cassandra Sherman pounded out doubles in this game.
Geneva 13 Penn Yan 4
The Penn Yan Mustang softball dropped a 13-4 decision to Geneva at home May 14. The Geneva girls are the champions of the Finger Lakes East League. The Mustangs finish the regular season with a 1-10 record in the league. They are 4-14 overall.
Cassandra Sherman had 3 hits for Penn Yan in Thursday's game. She also drove in a couple runs. Anessa Sherman picked up 2 hits for the Orange and Blue.
Honeoye 23, 23 Dundee 9, 16
The Dundee Scot softball team dropped a twin bill to Honeoye on Tuesday afternoon. The Bulldog softball crew knocked the Scots 23-9 in the first game and came back and won the nightcap 23-16. Xavia Miller picked up 2 hits for Dundee.
South Seneca 14 Dundee 2
The Falcons from South Seneca defeated Dundee 14-2 in a Finger Lakes West softball game played in Dundee on Thursday afternoon. Cara Booth picked up 2 hits for Dundee. The Scots finish their regular season with a 5-11 record.
Honeoye 5 Marcus Whitman 0
The Honeoye Bulldog softball team blanked the hometown Marcus Whitman girls in Gorham Thursday afternoon. Kaitlin Bordwell registered 7 strikeouts for the Wildcats.
The Wildcat softball team finishes the regular season with a 4-10 record in the Finger Lakes West. They are 5-12 overall.
High School Tennis
Marcus Whitman 3, Pal-Mac 2
The Marcus Whitman Wildcat tennis team remains undefeated in Finger Lakes League action. The Wildcats are a perfect 11-0 in the league and 12-1 overall. Tuesday afternoon in Gorham, Whitman defeated Pal/Mac 3-2. The Wildcat #1 doubles team of Chase Brown and Doug Payne also remain undefeated on the season.
Section V Qualifier
The New York State Section V tennis qualifier was held at Webster Schroeder and Webster Thomas May 14.
Marcus Whitman’s double team competed against Class B Batavia and was able to get a couple of points, which was rare for smaller schools. The team of Doug Payne and Chase Brown fell 1-6, 2-6 in the first round.
“It’s an unfamiliar event and the arena is a little bit intimidating for the boys,” Marcus Whitman coach Bryan Law said. “Once they got comfortable, it was just a little too late.”
Marcus Whitman’s season isn’t over, as the team will prepare for team sectionals next week.
“The loss today will help give them momentum into team sectionals, the sting of the loss will stay with them,” Law said. “Our goal is to get a patch, we fell short by one point last season and it’s been on our minds for a year now.”
Midlakes 3 Penn Yan 2
The Midlakes Screaming Eagle tennis team defeated Penn Yan 3-2 Tuesday afternoon in Phelps. The Mustang doubles team of Noah Terpolilli and Garrett Warren scored a victory in their match for Penn Yan. Penn Yan falls to 3-8 on the season.
Geneva 16 Marcus Whitman 1
The Marcus Whitman girl's lacrosse team dropped a 16-1 decision to Geneva Friday in Geneva the #5 seed. With the loss, the Wildcats are eliminated from the tournament. Ellie Nemitz scored the lone Whitman goal. Liz Cooley record 5 saves in the Wildcat goal.
The Wildcat girl's dropped a 19-4 decision to Waterloo in their regular season finale. Emily Thompson scored 2 goals in this game for Whitman. Abbie Alvord and Emma Knapp score the other goals for MW. The Whitman laxers finish their season with a 4-13 record.
