The Penn Yan baseball team saw its record fall to 1-1 on the young season as Midlakes came to town April 8 and went home with an 11-5 win.

The Mustangs mustered seven hits against Midlakes to put up the five runs but the pitching ran into trouble.

“We didn’t pitch too well,” said coach Willy Hilberger. “There were too many balls and not enough strikes. We only gave up 8 hits but also walked 8 guys.”

On the positive side, Penn Yan’s pitchers did strike out 11 batters. Clark Simmons paced the offense with three hits, including a double and three RBI. Peyton Schuck had a double and scored three runs. Matt Moniot and Tyler Bouchard each had a hit and an RBI.

“Our steep learning curve continues,” said Hilberger of his young squad.

Penn Yan is on the road against Geneva Wednesday for its only other game of the week.
