Basketball Sectionals: Scotsmen advance to quarter-final game with 62-58 win over Cal-Mum

After a one day delay due to the winter storm conditions, the Dundee Scotsmen boy's basketball team opened the Section V C-2 tournament against Cal-Mum on Wednesday evening in Dundee. The # 4 seeded Scots escaped with a 62-58 win over the #14 seed Red Raiders from Caledonia-Mumford. The game was closely fought throughout with Cal-Mum taking several leads in the first half. Dundee finally took their first lead in the third quarter 35-33 and led 48-46 after three quarters. With a couple of key baskets and rebounds by Talon Wright in the final minutes, Dundee emerged with the narrow 62.48 victory. The Scotsmen will host the #5 seed Campbell-Savona in the tournament quarter-final game Friday night in Dundee.

Ryan Sprague led the Dundee scoring attack with 17 points in spite of playing most of the second half with 4 fouls. Bobby Strait added 16 points and Devin Jensen 11. Jeff Haines drained two huge 3-pointers to help Dundee get back into the lead.

Girl's Basketball

Penn Yan 40 Waterloo 39

The Penn Yan Mustang girl's basketball team defeated Finger Lakes East rival Waterloo 40-39 in the opening round of the Section V Class B-1 tournament played in Penn Yan  Wednesday evening. The narrow win propels the Mustangs to the quarterfinals of the tournament. They will play the top seeded team in the bracket, the Livonia Bulldogs in Livonia Saturday afternoon. The game is slated to start at 2 p. m.

Topping the Penn Yan scoring ledger in the win against Waterloo was Sydney Bloom. She scored 12 points. Emily Wunder added 7 points and 12 rebounds. Emalee Brockman and Hannah Keech tossed in 6 and 5 points respectively for the Orange and Blue.

Marcus Whitman 55 Holley 18

The Marcus Whitman Wildcat girl's basketball team opened the 2015-16 Section V B-2 tournament with a convincing 55-18 win over Holley in Rushville Wednesday night. Dani Bagley led the Whitman scoring ledger with 20 points. Emily Thompson added 16 points and Ellie Nemitz 8. Marcus Whitman will play Wellsville Saturday in the tournament's next round.

Kendall 56 Bradford/Dundee 30

The Bradford/Dundee Braves girl's basketball team dropped a 56-30 decision to Kendall in the first round of the Section V C-2 tournament Wednesday night. Brittany Rinker led the Braves in scoring with 7 points. She also had 4 steals. Jaclyn Miller added 6 points and Tora Karolinussen contributed 5 points and hauled down 6 rebounds. Bradford/Dundee's season draws to an end with the loss. They ended their 2015-16 campaign with a 8-12 record.
