Basketball: Mustangs, Scots close regular season with wins

It was the last hurrah for Section V’s regular basketball season last week, with co-champions named in both the FL East Girls (Pal-Mac and Waterloo) and the FL West Girls (Marcus Whitman and Red Jacket).

Boys’ basketball

Penn Yan 45 Pal-Mac 42

The Mustangs defeated Pal-Mac at home Feb. 18 finishing out the season at 9-11 overall and 4-10 in the league, securing the 6th place spot in the FL East. For Penn Yan, Peter Nicholson scored 10 points, Devin Gerhardt scored 9 points, Brennan Prather and Mason Kuver both scored 7 points and Kyle Berna added 6 points.

Dundee 69 HAC 57

Both the boys’ and girls’ teams of Dundee marched into matches against HAC Feb. 18 and walked out winners. The Scots finished out their season at 9-11 overall and 7-7 in the league, tying with South Seneca for 4th place in the FL West.

Northstar 68 Marcus Whitman 58

The Whitman boys lost their final game this season to Northstar Christian Academy, finishing out the season at 14-6 overall. For the Wildcats, Noah Hildreth scored 14 points, Liam Prendergast scored 12 points and pulled in 10 rebounds, Aidan Royston scored 12 points and both Ryan Herod and Seth Benedict added 6 points to the team’s effort.

Girls’ basketball

Dundee 50 HAC 37

The Lady Scots beat out Harley-Allendale-Columbia Feb. 18, finalizing Dundee’s record at 12-8 for the season. For Dundee, Mackenzie Strait scored 14 points, 8 rebounds and 5 steals while teammate Makenzie Cratsley scored 14 points, 7 rebounds and 2 steals. Also for the Scots, Hallie Knapp scored 7 points, 10 rebounds and 3 steals and Trisha Edminster added 6 points with 4 rebounds. At a final league record of 6-6, Dundee finishes 4th in the FL West division.

Penn Yan 60 Pal-Mac 54

Penn Yan defeated Pal-Mac Feb. 19, finishing out the Mustangs’ season record at 14-6. For Penn Yan, Sierra Harrison scored 19 points, Joddie Decker scored 17 points with 10 rebounds and Ashley Sisson added 11 points and 12 rebounds. The Penn Yan girls finished out the season with a league record of 9-5 in the FL East, securing a 4th place finish within the league. The win for the Mustangs dropped Pal-Mac’s record to 12-2 with both losses this season at the hands of Penn Yan. With Waterloo’s defeat of Geneva on the same night, the regular season ends with Pal-Mac and Waterloo sharing the FL East title as co-champions.

Red Jacket 41 Marcus Whitman 35

Vying for the FL West title, Whitman took a loss in their final game against the Red Jacket Indians, bringing their overall record to 14-6 and their league record to 10-2. The loss makes Whitman and Red Jacket co-champs in the FL West division, the first time in the school’s history that Whitman have held the title. For the Wildcats, Maddie Ryan scored 16 points, Ari Beverly scored 8 points and Emily Paddock added 6 points.
