It’s been 25 years since a Penn Yan girls basketball team has won a Section V championship. And they captured this crown in decisive form against Avon Saturday afternoon.

Penn Yan 55 Avon 39

The Lady Mustangs rolled past the Avon Braves at Gates-Chili High School Saturday afternoon to be named the Section V Class B2 Champions.

Penn Yan led through the entirety of the game, extending their lead every quarter from a mere 2 points at the end of the first, up to 7 at the half, 11 at the end of 3 and a sizeable 16 at the final buzzer. Though both teams put up a good fight, Penn Yan's control of the game's rebounds on both ends of the court were a vital component to their victory. The Mustang boys' team was in the bleachers supporting their female counterparts and remained on their feet and very vocal through the whole game, cheering, singing and amping up the large Penn Yan crowd. The Lady Mustangs are next headed to take on Dansville in the B1/B2 playoff game.

"Dansville...they're a tough team; they're a great program," said Penn Yan Coach Katrina Davenport. "We're going to come up with our plan...the girls are hard workers. This is a great group to work with. It's been such a breath of fresh air working with this group this year and I'm really excited to see what they can do."

Davenport continued, "It's been 25 years since the Lady Mustangs have won a sectional title, so we're pretty proud of the girls and their effort and happy to be here."

Though Penn Yan is losing two vital seniors this year, Jenna Curbeau and Ashley Sisson, Davenport was optimistic about next year. "We're losing two important seniors," she said, "but we're looking forward to continuing to work hard and build for next year."

After the game, the Class B2 2020 Tournament All-Stars were named, including Penn Yan's Jenna Curbeau, Joddie Decker and 2020 MVP Sierra Harrison. The entire Penn Yan crowd was on its feet and cheering, nearly blowing the roof off Gates-Chili as the selections were named.

Penn Yan faces Dansville Tuesday, March 10 at Bath High School in the state qualifier.
