Mustangs win regular season finale

Penn Yan sinks Albany Academy 12-5

The Penn Yan Mustang boy's lacrosse team ended their 2015 regular season in fine fashion May 16. The Orange and Blue laxers defeated Albany Academy 12-5 at Mustang Field before an appreciative home crowd. The hometown boys raced to a 7-1 first half lead and cruised to the winning finish line with 5 more goals in the second half. The win was Penn Yan's 11th in 15 tries, and served as a tune-up for the upcoming Section V Tournament starting next week.

Sean Emerson was the Mustang scoring leader on this night. He scored 7 goals with marksman-like precision. Craig Gerhart added 2 goals and 2 assists. Austin Fingar netted 1 goal and 3 assists while senior Ben Covert contributed 1 goal and 2 assists. Ben Emerson also scored a goal. Gage Ponsetti accounted for 11 saves in the nets for Penn Yan.

The Mustangs are seeded at the top of the Class C bracket, and will host either Bath or Livonia Wednesday, May 20 at either 5 or 7 p.m. Here's a link to the bracket.

Girl's Lacrosse

The Penn Yan Mustang girl's lacrosse team defeated Ithaca 15-4 in Penn Yan Tuesday in a non-league match-up. The win improved Penn Yan's overall record to 14-1. They are undefeated in Finger Lakes I League action with a 12-0 record. They clinched the Finger Lakes League championship last week.

Courtney Lafler led the Mustang scoring onslaught with 4 goals and 1 assist. Heather Conklin registered 3 goals and added 5 assists. Brie Yonge notched 3 goals and an assist while Sydney Bloom netted 2 goals. Mara Dailey and Elissa Callaway also scored goals. Stacey Dailey and Hannah Christensen picked up assists. Jessica Covell stopped 7 shots in goal for Penn Yan.

Up next for the high-flying Mustang girl laxers, the Section V Tournament. The Mustangs are the top seeded team in Class C. They will host #8 Mynderse May 19. Here is a link to the bracket.
