It’s always a relief to get that first win out of the way when you’re a new coach. That’s exactly what happened for Melissa Armsden Tuesday as the Penn Yan softball team won their initial tilt of the season 9-4 over Williamson.

“They did awesome today,” said Armsden. “It was a great first season win and first varsity win for myself as a coach.”

Leading the way for the Mustangs was junior pitcher Kayla Andersen, who pitched seven innings with nine strikeouts and giving up just six hits. Contributing offensively were sophomore center fielder Kiana Larham, who went 4-for-5 with two doubles and a homerun, junior Taylor Hight who went 4-for-4, and junior Onalie Sheradin, who stroked a double.

Armsden credits the work her team put in before the season for the win.

“I was very proud of the hard work they put into the preseason,” she said. “They are dedicated to playing as a team and winning.”

Williamson began the scoring in the top of the first innings as they put a couple baserunners on and were able to score on a Penn Yan overthrow. Penn Yan answered in the bottom of the inning when Larham smacked her homerun.

Penn Yan threatened in the bottom of the second inning when #15 lead off with a double and Akiya Brewer followed with a walk to give the Mustangs two baserunners with no outs. Williamson’s pitcher, Olivia Flynn, recorded two of her five strikeouts on the next two hitters to record two outs. Larham came up and smacked a line drive to right field but it was caught, ending the rally.

Another rally in the third inning was stymied when Elle Harrison was thrown out stealing and Williamson turned a nifty 1-2-3 double play on a hard hit ball by Andersen back to the pitcher.

Williamson scored three runs in the top of the fourth when they were able to string together some hits. Penn Yan answered to tie the game at four runs apiece in the bottom of the inning before scoring five more runs and securing the win.

The team plays Mynderse at home tonight.
