Southern Tier district Hoop Shoot results

Saturday, Jan. 30 saw the end of the road for all Penn Yan contestants in this year’s Elks Hoop Shoot program as the rims in the Horseheads gym were not kind to the local youngsters.

Penn Yan did have a couple of second place finishes, but it was Horseheads and Elmira that dominated the morning as both lodges raced off with two winners. And when Watkins Glen and Ithaca picked up the other two championships, it left Penn Yan as the bridesmaid rather than the bride for the day’s activities. Here are the results for the competition.

In the girls 8/9 division, Penn Yan’s Alexis Parsons picked up a second place trophy but not without a struggle going 1 for her first 10. She then made 5 of the next 15, which turned out to be just good enough for the runner-up slot while first place winner Mayanna Sindlinger of Horseheads fired in 12 of 25 to capture top honors.

From the boys side of the same division the winner was Louis McHenry of Elmira, who finished in a tie with Cody Dale of Horseheads, each boy making 18 of his 25 shots. In the shoot off, Dale went 3 for 5, while McHenry nailed 4 of 5 to squeak out the victory. Penn Yan’s Brady Bouchard went 14 for 25, ending up in third place.

Back at the regular distance for free throws now for the 10/11 competition and it was time for Carly Scott of Horseheads to pick up the second championship for that lodge as she bested Laura Miller of Elmira 16 to 12 of each girl’s twenty five shots. They started tied at 7 of their first 10, but Carly got hot toward the end making 6 of her last 7 shots for the victory. Penn Yan’s Jammie Decker took third place with 9 of 25 shots falling through.

For the boys, River Toffolo of lthaca and Jacob Powers of Watkins Glen each made 18 of 25 shots in regulation. Tuffolo made 3 of his 5 extra shots, while Powers only made 2 of his, allowing River to move on to the West Regional. Penn Yan’s Griffin Emerson finished third making 11 of his 25 shots.

The girls and boys ages 12 and 13 made up the final bracket of the day. On the lady’s side it was Adrienna Solomon of Watkins Glen finishing in the top spot, making 18 of her 25 shots. Second place went to Jenna Granger from Horseheads with 14 of 25 shots falling for the day, while Penn Yan’ s Jaina Doyle was 9 for 25 to third.

The boys finished the day with Dundee’s Steven Webster (Penn Yan) taking second place with 18 of 25 losing to Adam Arnold of Elmira who finished with 19 of 25.

All winners now go to Tonawanda on Saturday, Feb. 13 for the West Regional Contest. Winners there move to the New York State finals in Vestal New York.
