Grace Roberts, Penn Yan Rotary Student of the Month

The Penn Yan Rotary Club was pleased to honor Grace Roberts as Student of the Month on Tuesday, April 11, at Knapper’s Canalside Pub & Music Café in Penn Yan. For many of the months in each school year the club honors an outstanding Penn Yan student who demonstrates The Rotary Four Way Test, which values “truth, fairness, and beneficial actions which build goodwill and friendships.” Grace’s Penn Yan Academy art teacher, Jillian Volpe, and her mother, Carrie Roberts, joined Grace for her celebration lunch and presentation.

ONYA Awards Mini-Grants

FINGER LAKES – For 23 years, Ontario Yates Fund for Women and Girls (ONYA) has helped local women and girls find their voices by fostering personal and economic self-sufficiency. To do this, ONYA funds non-profit programs that foster personal and economic growth for women and girls in Ontario and Yates Counties.

4th Annual Community Read April 21 – May 12

The Penn Yan Action Coalition (PYAC) invites the community to join in reading and discussing books on current topics surrounding immigrant experiences in America. PYAC recommend two very different books: Beautiful Country: A Memoir of an Undocumented Childhood by Qian Julie Wang, and/or Go Back to Where You Came From: And Other Helpful Recommendations on How to Become American by Wajahat Ali. Both books are available at Longs’ Cards & Books on Main Street in Penn Yan for $14.99 each, or for $13.99 each if you purchase both. You may choose to read either or both; they will provoke stimulating conversation on their distinct styles and on the ideas they present.

They are recommending two books to begin to capture this diverse narrative: Beautiful Country by Qian Julie Wang and Go Back to Where You Came From by Wajahat Ali; read either or both, and gather for a series of events between April and May.
