Coats for Kids drive begins

KEUKA LAKE -- October 4, Howard Hanna Lake Group began their annual winter coat drive, collecting Coats for Kids. Donors can drop of new or gently used coats at the Howard Hanna Lake Group Offices at 229 Lake Street in Penn Yan, or at 52 Pulteney Street in Hammondsport.

For more information about the YCHC, visit www.yatespast.org. 150 Years Ago October 3, 1872 A Noble Act — On Monday afternoon as the Philadelphia Express on the Northern Central Railway was proceeding South at the rate of twenty-five or thirty miles per hour, between “Milo and Himrod stations, the engineer, Mr. George Van Over, saw a child sitting on the track. ‘He at once applied the atmospheric brake. The fireman, Mr. John Keef, seeing the train could not be stopped, rushed forward to the pilot of the engine, and holding himself with one hand, with the other brushed the child so far from the rail as to escape all injury. The child, being too small to step over the rail, had got down on its hands and feet to crawl over to escape from the danger it had foreseen, just as the fireman brushed it from the track. The train finally stopped and the child was restored to its mother, who came running through the fields to receive her missing but loving child. The act was a brave and meritorious one, and both the engineer and firemen received the blessings of the mother as well as the hearty commendations of the passengers on the train. ~ Elmira Advertiser Plutarch observers of Solon — “But it is not enough for a man in office to be disinterested and upright himself; all that surround him ought to be so too. October 1 marks the start of a new 4-H year, making it the perfect time to get involved. ‘Unity’ Art Guild Exhibit to open at ACYC

WHAT: Penn Yan Art Guild Exhibit opening WHEN: 5-7 p.m. Friday, Sept. 30 WHERE: Arts Center of Yates County, 127 Main St., Penn Yan WHO: Local artists from Penn Yan and around Yates County The Penn Yan Art Guild will celebrate its 60th year at this year’s annual Guild exhibit at the Arts Center of Yates County. Opening formally on Friday, Sept. 30 from 5-7 p.m., the work of Penn Yan Art Guild members will be on display until Nov. 7. The theme of this year’s Guild show is “Unity.”
