SENECA LAKE -- Governor Kathy Hochul has announced the establishment of New York’s first-ever State Veterans Cemetery, made possible with the transfer of ownership of the Sampson Veterans Memorial Cemetery from Seneca County to the State and $2.8 million available from the National Cemetery Administration.

PENN YAN - At the Feb. 13 meeting of the Yates County Legislature, Douglas Gibbs was unanimously appointed as the next Director of Veterans’ Services for Yates County.
The Yates County Youth Bureau is seeking applicants to provide sports programs to underserved youth ages 6-17 via local nonprofit or municipal organizations. Yates County has $12,275 to allocate to local programs.

PENN YAN - The Yates County History Center recently received funding from Greater Hudson Heritage Network to conserve a portrait of Joseph Thayer Sr. Klara Zold, of Corning, has been contracted to perform the conservation work. The portrait is one of three paintings of the Thayer family of Barrington in the History Center’s collection – the other two depicting Thayer Sr.’s wife, Samantha, and his son, Joseph Thayer Jr. – and the second of the three to be conserved.
The Williams-Insalaco Gallery 34 at Finger Lakes Community College will open an exhibit, “Keeping a Promise,” photographs and accompanying poems inspired by the photos, on Thursday, March 2. The exhibit features photographs by the late Joe Ripperger with poems by his aunt, retired FLCC humanities professor Barbara Murphy.
