Reviving Crooked Lake Canal for Runoff Reduction

YATES COUNTY - For the past several years, multiple organizations and hundreds of local citizens participated in the research and scientific-based study to explore ways to improve the water quality of Seneca Lake and its massive watershed. The result of this community-wide effort, which included numerous public forums, was the creation of the Nine Element Plan (9E). This carefully crafted and NYSDEC approved quantitative watershed-based management plan specifically addresses non-point source pollution.

Maryland man drowns in Keuka

KEUKA LAKE – Steuben County Sheriff Jim Allard reports that on May 12, 2023, at about 1:42 p.m., deputies and investigators responded to a report of 19-year-old male drowning in Keuka Lake. Investigation revealed that a family visiting from Maryland on vacation were on a pontoon boat in Keuka Lake in the Town of Urbana when AHMED AYAZ, 19 of Catonsville, Md.

Planning to watch the great wheel in the sky?

I began writing this column in late April but set it aside because I thought there would be plenty of time to get into this discussion. Then I saw reports about tourism and hospitality businesses in the area beginning to make plans to attract eclipse chasers. I decided we should probably take a closer look at just where we will be able to actually see the total solar eclipse that will happen April 8, 2024.
