Penn Yan Academy held Media Night on Monday, March 27 to kick-off the Spring athletic season. The night began with a dinner for the athletes in PYA’s cafeteria before the teams and coaches rotated through several stations, meeting local media, taking team and individual pictures, listening to a presentation by Penn Yan Athletic Director Jon MacKerchar and writing “Thank You” notes to district staff members who make the season possible.
Girls Lacrosse Mar. 28 Waterloo-Marcus Whitman 16, Geneva 8 Combining for the first time this year, Waterloo-Marcus Whitman kicked their season off with a nonleague game against Geneva, doubling the Panthers’ score to take the win. Allie Good led Geneva with four goals. Geneva’s goalie, Sophia Cosentino saved 19 shots and allowed 16, performing just above the 50% line.
UTICA – The nationally 20th-ranked Cortland women’s lacrosse team erupted for 14 first-half goals in cruising to a 17-6 win at Utica University Tuesday afternoon in non-conference action. The Red Dragons improved to 5-3, while the Pioneers dropped to 4-3.
PENN YAN -- The Penn Yan Mustangs, the 2022 Section V, Class D Lacrosse Champions, had their first scrimmage of the new season last week. After losing only one senior last year, the team is loaded with talent in 2023.
AURORA — The Keuka College Men’s Lacrosse team set a new program record with 27 goals as the Wolves defeated Wells College 27-2 on the road on Wednesday. Matt Jerman (Liverpool) and Nicholas Pipher (Auburn) each scored a career-high six goals to lead Keuka College (3-1, 0-0 Empire 8).
(Auburn) scored for the Wolves, but Keystone had a goal to match. The Wolves led 7-2 at the half.
KEUKA PARK — The Keuka College Men’s Lacrosse team won their fourth straight game on Saturday with a 20-4 victory over Keystone College at the Jephson Community Athletic Complex. Senior Brandon MacDonell (Midlakes) scored six goals and added a pair of assists for Keuka College (4-1, 0-0 Empire 8).
KEUKA PARK — For the second time in three weeks, Keuka College sophomore Devon Gerhardt (Penn Yan Academy) was named Empire 8 Men’s Lacrosse Co-Player of the Week. It was another strong week for Gerhardt and the Wolves as the team won both of their games convincingly.
